Reflexology works on the theory that our feet and hands are mirror images of our bodies and that by stimulating certain reflex points the corresponding organ, gland or body part is being stimulated. Imagine the feet/hands being divided into 5, 3 dimensional longitudinal lines (zones).
 | There are over 7000 nerve endings in our feet so by working through these zones, the therapist is stimulating nerve impulses to travel through the zones, as energy if you like.
Because of stress, injury or illness the body is in a state of dis-ease or imbalance. These energy channels that help us to function efficiently, become blocked. This gentle treatment helps unblock these energy zones and so bring our body back into balance (homeostasis).

Treatment for Reflexology begins with an initial consultation. The consultation is important not only for the therapist to ascertain factors regarding lifestyle and medical issues, but also for the client to relax with the therapist before the treatment commences.
The consultation usually takes 15 minutes or so. Some conditions can be contra-indicated but most conditions respond favourably.
As Reflexology only requires the removal of footwear, it is an excellent therapy to bring to the workplace.
The client will usually be reclined on a therapy couch or recliner. The therapist will examine the feet, cleanse them and begin relaxing them, after taking note of observations. Treatment generally lasts 45 minutes or so and ends with a relaxing foot massage. At the end of the treatment, the therapist will offer advice regarding their findings. It is usually recommended, depending on the presenting problem, that 4 – 6 treatments are beneficial.
During the treatment some people experience some of the following reactions:
Sleepiness/falling asleep Coldness/warmth Strong emotions, laughing, crying Sensations of tingling in parts of the body
| |
This is a good thing as it means you are sensitive to Reflexology and the potential benefit from treatment is likely.
Reactions may be experienced up to 24 hours after treatment, sometimes even longer.
It is not unusual to experience one or more of the following:
Feel very relaxed or tired Feel excessively active Pass urine frequently or open bowels. The urine may be darker in colour The stools darker and more offensive. Sweat more
| Flatulence. Change in sleep patterns. Change in body temperature Slight headache. Mood changes. Slight skin eruptions or spots. Old injuries may ache.
|
These reactions are part of the healing process. PLEASE do keep a note of any changes.
Do drink plenty of water, especially over the next day or so.
